Pregnant with Possibility
The Divine summons is crystal clear, “So now, go. I am sending you…”
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go…?” That response feels like a thousand pound blanket, not only being draped over this scene, but one we can feel laid on our own lives, correct?
Who am I to do this?
God has just informed Moses that the cry of the suffering has been heard, the people’s pain has been seen, and the Divine rescue plan has begun. Coming out of 2020, this scene looks terribly familiar, correct?
Will the Divine hear us, see us, and step in to rescue us?
And I imagine there are many people who are wondering and waiting. For far too many, rescue is out there or over there or someday when… which merely keeps us closed off to the clear call, “So now, go. I am sending you.”
Once again, this has been the unfolding story from the very beginning, the Divine invites and calls for our participation. We were never to simply sit and watch, to rub the magic lamp and wait for the Jesus genie to do all the work. If that were true, then I imagine the life of Jesus would look a whole lot different. Jesus would not have called people to follow, rather he’d just bounce to resurrection without going through all the heartache of developing relationships, and then walking the road of suffering.
The Way has always been one of invitation and participation.
All throughout the Grand Story we encounter the least and little, the poor and the aged, unexpectedly becoming pregnant with Divine possibility. The outsider and unqualified, the looked down on and the quirky. This is who the Divine has called to give birth to the new thing. And let’s not at all miss the literal within the metaphor of giving birth, because the absolute necessity of resolute, female strength is an imperative.
Father Ronald Rolheiser offers a gorgeous Christmas reflection that fits well within this summons:
“What changes the world is what we give birth to in obscurity and dust, within the frustration of lives that will always seem too small for us.”
Read that again. Whew, it needles me. It pokes at my wounds and unwillingness, provoking me to wake up to possibility.
Whoever you are and wherever you are, may the inspiration of Incarnation awaken you to the reality of your life being Pregnant with Possibility. No matter your age or perceived (in)ability, you are here and you belong. You have been created through, and hold within you, Divine spark.
So now, go.
