Becoming a Dad

What is it like to be dad? It’s like watching my heart grow legs and then leave my body to explore this grand adventure we call life. It is both exhilarating and terrifying.

Being a dad is both heart bursting and heart breaking.

This all seems to happen simultaneously. And because I have three boys, it means three unique experiences in this. I do not worry about my boys getting into the “right schools” or getting the “right job,” or how much those jobs pay. Boring and stale and not worth the worry. But I do hunger for them to…hunger. To care deeply about the things that matter most. For their eyes to see and their hearts to break for the poor, oppressed, left out and looked down on.

To care about justice.

To care about their neighbor.

This is a Divine hunger. The greatest barrier to all of this is… distraction. Not being present to the Presence, which has been here the whole time we were just… distracted. I’m not working on being a great dad, I’m working on being present. Not distracted.

If that rubs off, I’d be thrilled.
